Driving innovation
for a popular football app.
Working in a highly competitive market, it is essential to drive innovation by introducing a steady stream of new features, and staying at the forefront of user-centred design trends. In this project you can see four of those features that I worked on to help Goal Live Scores become one of the most popular football apps on the market.
Goal Live Scores is the most complete football app on the market. Bringing you the fastest live football scores and breaking news straight to your mobile.
Goal Live Scores was part of a suite of apps owned by DAZN, the world’s leading live and on-demand sports streaming service.
My role
Working as the lead UX/UI designer, I was responsible for enhancing the user experiences on the app and crafting design solutions for new features.
Success criteria
We conducted user testing for each feature to ensure the delivery of optimal user experiences. After deployment, we would track success through several metrics, such as the number of active users, new app downloads, user retention rates and customer satisfaction. We also analysed where users might disengage or drop-off, to identify areas we could improve the experience.
Onboarding new users
Problem statement
When new customers first open the app, they often encounter a suboptimal experience because they have not yet selected their favourite teams. Without a personalised experience, users may struggle to find content that aligns with their interests, leading to frustration and potentially hindering the app’s ability to meet its engagement and retention goals.
The solution
Users will be prompted to select their favourite teams with clear instructions and easy-to-use search options. Popular and local teams will be suggested for quick personalised selections. Users are able to add up to 50 teams, followed by notification preferences for their selected teams. Users will be asked to complete this onboarding process the first time they launch the app. For users that do not complete this onboarding experience, we’ll employ subtle, non-intrusive reminders. The suggested teams will be backed by data analysis and user feedback for continuous improvement.
The home of the fastest and most compelling sports data app
Problem statement
To enhance the user experience, we need to implement features that allow users to effortlessly track live games, quickly access essential match details, and add a personalised view to show their preferred teams and leagues as soon as they open the app.
The solution
A customisable home screen where users can select and prioritise their favourite teams and leagues. Upon opening the app, they will see relevant information such as kickoff times and scores for these preferred teams and leagues.
A ‘Live’ button on the home page to allow users to filter matches that are currently in-flight. This feature enables users to quickly identify how many live events are taking place and track real-time scores and updates right at their fingertips. It works alongside the priority sorting of users’ favourite teams and leagues.
Using OPTA data, we created an in-depth summary analysis for each game, providing comprehensive key events, statistics, player insights, and commentary. By using this feature, users can quickly gain a deeper understanding any chosen game.
2018 World Cup
Problem statement
As the 2018 World Cup tournament approaches, we expect to see an influx of new users downloading the app. As the current app experience is designed to be accessible to many different global leagues, this presents a problem for fans who are only looking to follow the World Cup action.
The solution
To enhance the user experience for World Cup fans, we introduced a temporary dedicated World Cup hub in the app. This feature allowed users to focus exclusively on World Cup content, such as fixtures, results, live tables, competition brackets, news, videos, and player statistics. Users can switch between the standard global league mode and the World Cup mode to streamline their experience, providing a user-friendly interface for those interested in the World Cup and also catering to the broader user base.
Live scores meets live video
Problem statement
A challenge has derived from the recent acquisition of Goal Live Scores by DAZN, an online sports streaming platform. This merger presents a significant growth and profit opportunity through shared capabilities and a unique customer base, in countries where DAZN holds licensing to major leagues. Failing to integrate effectively could result in missed potential, impacting DAZN’s ambition of becoming the number one subscription-based live sports coverage platform, with the fastest and most compelling sports data.
The solution
To maximise potential we needed to align content offerings and leverage DAZN’s streaming capabilities to optimise user experiences – using existing functionality from the current framework. All of the features users had grown to love within the app remained unchanged. The seamless integration allowed fans to watch full matches, game highlights and goals, at the same time as checking the latest scores and stats data from all major leagues around the world. This was achieved by using video overlays and widgets, so that users could seamlessly switch between content within the app.
